                     HOUSE  RESOLUTION
CONGRATULATING WYLAND OCEAN CHALLENGE OF AMERICA CONTEST WINNERS

 1       WHEREAS, MICHELLE BOLO, KATHERINE-MARIE MARCHAN, TRACY
 2   SATURNO, JULIA SHIMIZU, LEATO SAVINI, and DAVID PETERSON Jr.
 3   won first place in the first ever Wyland Ocean Challenge of
 4   America Contest, which drew more than 1000 entries from across
 5   the United States; and
 6   
 7       WHEREAS, these six Wai'anae High School sophomores won in
 8   the category of mini-video documentary, with the film entitled
 9   "Malama I Ke Kai," which means protecting our ocean's
10   resources, and also garnered top prize in the original song
11   category with the Hawaiian chant "Kai Ulu - Flourish Is the
12   Sea;" and
13   
14       WHEREAS, these six Wai'anae High School sophomores, in
15   producing this video and song with the expert guidance of
16   science teacher Tess Kaji, and mass-media instructor Candy
17   Suiso, explored the issue of over-fishing and its impact on the
18   ocean and people of Hawaii, and in doing so, became aware of
19   the need for global ocean conservation; and
20   
21       WHEREAS, these six Wai'anae High School sophomores and two
22   teachers will accept these awards in Los Angeles on April 22,
23   1999 at the official Wyland Foundation Awards Program, where
24   they will see and meet celebrities and dignitaries, such as
25   U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan, U.S. Senator Daniel Inouye,
26   Vice President Al Gore, and Wyland himself; and
27       
28       WHEREAS, these six Wai'anae High School sophomores will
29   have their award-winning video and song on display in Wyland
30   Galleries throughout Southern California; now, therefore,
31   
32       BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the
33   Twentieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session
34   of 1999, that this body congratulates MICHELLE BOLO, KATHERINE-
35   MARIE MARCHAN, TRACY SATURNO, JULIA SHIMIZU, LEATO SAVINI, and
36   DAVID PETERSON Jr. for their fine contributions to the
37   community, and extends to them best wishes for continued
38   success in all future endeavors.
