                    SENATE  CONCURRENT
                        RESOLUTION
  REQUESTING THE DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE AND THE AGRIBUSINESS
    DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION TO PROMOTE THE SALE OF LOCALLY
    GROWN FRUITS AND VEGETABLES.



 1        WHEREAS, Hawaii's agricultural industry has changed
 2   dramatically in recent years with the closing of sugar cane
 3   plantations that once dominated our economy and lifestyle; and
 4   
 5        WHEREAS, government has recognized this change in the
 6   agricultural industry and has devoted its efforts to supporting
 7   local farmers in establishing new markets, objectives, and
 8   goals; and
 9   
10        WHEREAS, local farmers need government's assistance in
11   expanding markets to generate demand for locally produced
12   agricultural products; and
13   
14        WHEREAS, consumers have not been educated and are not
15   aware of the value of local produce in terms of freshness,
16   taste, and overall superior quality; and
17   
18        WHEREAS, the Department of Agriculture and the
19   Agribusiness Development Corporation are charged with promoting
20   and marketing agricultural products to assist local farmers
21   sell their produce; now, therefore,
22   
23        BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twentieth Legislature
24   of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 1999, the House of
25   Representatives concurring, that the Department of Agriculture
26   and the Agribusiness Development Corporation are requested to
27   promote the sale of locally grown fruits and vegetables to
28   create new and expand existing markets; and
29   
30        BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Agriculture
31   and the Agribusiness Development Corporation are requested to
32   report to the Legislature on their efforts pursuant to this
33   Concurrent Resolution twenty days before the convening of the
34   Regular Session of 2000; and

 1        BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this
 2   Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the
 3   Board of Agriculture and the Chairperson of the Agribusiness
 4   Development Corporation.
