                   A BILL FOR AN ACT

MAKING AN APPROPRIATION FOR PINEAPPLE RESEARCH.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

1 SECTION 1. The legislature finds that the pineapple

2 industry is a primary agriculture industry in the State and is a

3 strong economic component of the State's financial base. The

4 legislature further finds that the three pineapple companies pay

5 $6,200,000 in state taxes, employ 3,000 people, and spend more

6 than than $970,000 per year in Hawaii on proprietary agricultural

7 research. However, the agriculture industry is more at risk now

8 than in the past because of shifts in market demands and

9 increased global competition, primarily due to the lower overseas

10 cost of business.

11 The legislature recognizes that the adverse effects of

12 losing this industry would be socially and economically damaging

13 to the State. Therefore, ongoing research for continuous

14 improvement to the quantity and quality of pineapple production

15 is necessary to maintain and expand this important industry.

16 The purpose of this Act is to provide the necessary funds to

17 support pineapple research projects that focus on pest

18 management, environmental research, and fruit quality at the

19 University of Hawaii or the Hawaii Agriculture Research Center.

1 SECTION 2. There is appropriated out of the general

2 revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $208,000 or so much

3 thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 1999-2000 and the sum

4 of $208,000 or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal
