                   A  BILL  FOR  AN  ACT

RELATING TO COURTS.



BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 1      SECTION 1.  Section 612-6, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is
 
 2 amended by amending subsection (b) to read as follows:
 
 3      "(b) [From January 1, 1991, for the courts of the first
 
 4 circuit, and from January 1, 1992, for all other circuits of the
 
 5 State, a] A person may claim exemption from service as a juror if
 
 6 the person [is:] lives more than       miles from the court for
 
 7 which jury service is required or is:
 
 8      (1)  An attorney at law;
 
 9      (2)  A head of an executive department, an elected official,
 
10           or a judge, of the United States, State or county;
 
11      (3)  A minister or priest following the minister's or
 
12           priest's profession;
 
13      (4)  A practicing physician or dentist;
 
14      (5)  A member of the armed forces or militia when on active
 
15           service, or an active member of a police or fire
 
16           department; or
 
17      (6)  A person who has served as a juror, either in a court
 
18           of this State or the United States District Court for

 1           the District of Hawaii, within one year preceding the
 
 2           time of filling out the juror qualification form.
 
 3      SECTION 2.  Statutory material to be repealed is bracketed.
 
 4 New statutory material is underscored.
 
 5      SECTION 3.  This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
