                    SENATE  RESOLUTION
  FORMULATING A PLAN FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION AT THE INDIVIDUAL
    SCHOOL LEVEL FOR A COMPUTER EDUCATION PROGRAM IN THE
    PUBLIC SCHOOLS.



 1        WHEREAS, computers and computer technology are spreading
 2   throughout society, making an abiding impact on how we work and
 3   play; and
 4   
 5        WHEREAS, almost every job is or will be transformed by
 6   computer technology; and
 7   
 8        WHEREAS, our children's future may depend on their
 9   knowledge of computers, making this just as critical a
10   component of their education as reading and arithmetic; and
11   
12        WHEREAS, children today must be educated about and
13   comfortable with computers to be able to fit into tomorrow's
14   economy; and
15   
16        WHEREAS, some public schools have programs involving
17   computers, but these programs are not uniform or comprehensive;
18   and
19   
20        WHEREAS, the public schools need to offer a systematic,
21   thoughtful, and comprehensive computer curriculum as a part of
22   the basic educational needs of public school students; now,
23   therefore,

25        BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twentieth Legislature
26   of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2000, that the
27   Department of Education, the Board of Education, and the
28   Superintendent of Education are requested to formulate a
29   comprehensive computer education curriculum at the individual
30   school level for public school students; and
31   
32        BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the plan should stress goals
33   and measurable objectives, and should include budgets and a
34   timetable for implementation; and

 1        BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Education is
 2   requested to report findings and recommendations to the
 3   Legislature concerning a comprehensive computer education plan
 4   no later than twenty days before the convening of the Regular
 5   Session of 2001; and
 6   
 7        BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this
 8   Resolution be transmitted to the Superintendent of Education
 9   and the Chairperson of the Board of Education.
