HOUSE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

COMMENDING THE ACADEMY OF TRAVEL AND TOURISM AND THE ACADEMY OF FINANCE PROGRAMS AT WAIPAHU HIGH SCHOOL AND OTHER HIGH SCHOOLS AND URGING THE CONTINUED SUPPORT OF THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION AND THE HAWAII TOURISM AUTHORITY BOARD.

 

 

WHEREAS, the Academy of Travel and Tourism and the Academy of Finance, established at Waipahu High School in 1995, and now part of the Learning Center Program, have provided opportunities for high school students to enroll in two year programs relevant to the travel and financial industries; and

WHEREAS, coursework prepares students for careers in our most vital industry; and

WHEREAS, ninety-eight per cent of the academy graduates pursue post secondary education programs and participate in the early-admit college programs as seniors; and

WHEREAS, the Learning Center, on the strength of the Travel and Tourism and the Finance Academies' successes, was recently named as one of the top three high schools in the nation by Business Week Magazine for its implementation of economic literacy; and

WHEREAS, the Academies have been supported since their inception by travel and tourist industry leaders and companies who provide resources, scholarships, and in-kind contributions; and

WHEREAS, the model established at Waipahu High School has been replicated at four neighbor island high schools and will be implemented statewide to benefit students in all other schools around the state; and

WHEREAS, investment in the "human" infrastructure of our visitor industry is important to our economic future and to the public that participates in the industry’s successes and rewards; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2001, the Senate concurring, that the Legislature commends the Academy of Travel and Tourism and the Academy of Finance Programs at Waipahu High School and other high schools and urges the continued support of the Department of Education and the Hawaii Tourism Authority Board.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the achievements and benefits of Academy Programs be widely publicized and promoted among all students, faculties, and parent organizations in the state; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Education and the Hawaii Tourism Authority provide the support necessary to educate and enhance the work force necessary for all aspects of the visitor industry; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Superintendent and to the Chairperson of the Board of Education; the President of the Hawaii Visitor and Convention Bureau; Hawaii Tourism Authority; American Express; Sheraton Hotels Hawaii; Trans Hawaiian; Hawaiian Airlines; and Atlantis Adventures.
