HOUSE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

supporting efforts to fund IMPROVEMENTS TO THE LANAKILA MULTI-PURPOSE SENIOR CENTER.

 

 

WHEREAS, human longevity is increasing and Hawaii's elderly population is one of the fastest-growing in the country; and

WHEREAS, the Lanakila Multi-purpose Senior Center (Center), operated by Catholic Charities, serves 2,640 senior citizens in the urban core of Honolulu with programs that improve the mental, emotional, and physical well-being of our state's elderly people on a daily basis; and

WHEREAS, since 1969, Catholic Charities has supported the operations of the Center above and beyond what is provided by government funding but can no longer afford to allocate any of its existing operating funds to the Center's improvement projects; and

WHEREAS, the Center requires:

(1) Repair of restroom to include replacement or renovation of floor tiles, lighting, ventilation, and provision of handicapped-accessible stalls at an estimated cost of $120,000;

(2) Clearing of the sewer line and installation of a valve to prevent back up after a heavy rain at an estimated cost of $40,000; and

(3) Repair or replacement of the stage area and stairs, and installation of a wheelchair lift at an estimated cost of $95,000;

(4) Repair of the "Go" room to include renovation of floors, walls, wood exterior doors, and the roof exhaust fan at an estimated cost of $35,000;

(5) Replacement of all exterior doors with new handicapped-accessible and code-approved doors at an estimated cost of $54,000;

(6) Replacement of cracked and broken floor tiles in the corridor at an estimated cost of $65,000;

(7) Removal and replacement of existing cooking equipment, exterior doors, and hardware in the kitchen building at an estimated cost of $15,000; and

(8) Repair and renovation of the walkway and concrete gutter downspout splash blocks in the courtyard at an estimated cost of $20,000;

and

WHEREAS, the State needs to take the initiative to maintain facilities in the Center to ensure that the rapidly-growing senior population have a safe environment in which to enhance their lives by being socially and mentally active through enrichment programs; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2001, the Senate concurring, that this body supports efforts to improve the Center; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this body urges the Department of Accounting and General Services to appropriate $505,000 out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii for fiscal year 2001-2002 for the Center's improvement projects; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Comptroller and the Executive Director of Catholic Charities.
