HOUSE RESOLUTION

Congratulating jill hirota, bess jennings, Charlene Miyashiro and Devora Lemus for attaining national board certification for professional teaching and for elevating high quality standards of teaching throughout the state.

 

WHEREAS, the people of Hawaii take great pride in recognizing and honoring the notable achievements and contributions of educators who, through their extraordinary dedication and personal efforts, have significantly improved the quality of education for students in the State; and

WHEREAS, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards was founded in 1987 as an independent, nonprofit, nonpartisan organization governed by a sixty-three member board of directors, the majority of whom are classroom teachers; and

WHEREAS, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards is nationally recognized for improving student learning in America's schools by developing a new system of advanced, voluntary certification for elementary, middle, and secondary school teachers; and

WHEREAS, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards establishes rigorous standards for what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do, certifying teachers through an intense assessment process, and addresses education policy and reform issues including teacher education, professional development, teacher recruitment, and school environment enhancement; and

WHEREAS, JILL HIROTA, BESS JENNINGS, CHARLENE MIYASHIRO, and DEVORA LEMUS underwent and passed a vigorous series of exams, constructed a voluminous portfolio of their classroom work, and participated in exercises designed to help tap into the knowledge, skills, disposition and professional judgement that distinguishes their profession; and

WHEREAS, as distinguished educators JILL HIROTA, a second grade teacher at Waialua Elementary School, and BESS JENNINGS a resource teacher at the Hawaii District Office Department of Education, became nationally certified in the area of Early Childhood/Generalist; and

WHEREAS, CHARLENE MIYASHIRO, a fifth grade teacher at Waiakeawaena School, became nationally certified in the area of Middle Childhood/Generalist; and

WHEREAS, DEVORA LEMUS, a K-6 teacher at Maili Elementary, became nationally certified in the area of Art; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2001, that this body hereby honors and commends JILL HIROTA, BESS JENNINGS, CHARLENE MIYASHIRO, and DEVORA LEMUS as Hawaii’s National Board Certified Teachers, and extends to them its warmest appreciation and aloha for elevating the standards of teaching throughout the State.
