HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

congratulating hawaii's peace corps pioneers.

 

 

WHEREAS, since its founding over 161,000 Americans have joined the Peace Corps serving in 134 nations and these dedicated and idealistic volunteers reflected the rich diversity of our nation; and

WHEREAS, Hawaii has been in the forefront of the Peace Corps mission to address global concerns such as expanding education for children, promoting economic opportunity, improving health and agriculture, and preserving the environment; and

WHEREAS, Hawaii's pioneers in the Peace Corps include Mary Matayoshi, who served as Deputy Director of the University's Peace Corps Training Center from 1962-1969; Richard and Ann Port, who were the first American Peace Corps couple, serving in Ghana from 1961 to 1963, and have distinguished themselves through a lifetime of service in education and civil affairs; Dr. Gregory Pai, who returned to his family's immigrant homeland to serve in Seoul, South Korea from 1969-1972, and who now serves on Hawaii's Public Utilities Commission; and Dr. Ned Schultz, who served in Seoul, South Korea from 1966-1967, and is currently the Director of Korean Studies at the University of Hawaii; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-First Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2001, that this body hereby congratulates all of Hawaii's Returned Peace Corps Volunteers on the fortieth anniversary of the Peace Corps, and expresses its appreciation to all the dedicated volunteers who served courageously and selflessly thereby improving the quality of life in Hawaii and throughout the world.
