HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

urging the GOVERNOR to DECLARE MARCH 2001 Hawaii WoMEN's History MONTH in the state of hawaii.

 

WHEREAS, though rarely included in written records and history books and often ignored in traditional history classes, women have participated in every phase of the cultural, political, and social evolution of America; and

WHEREAS, American women have played and continue to play a critical economic, cultural, and social role in every sphere of our Nation's life by constituting a significant portion of the labor force working in and outside of the home; and

WHEREAS, National Women's History Month, in March of each year, is a time for Hawaii and the nation to celebrate the historical accomplishments of women; and

WHEREAS, the Foundation for Hawaii Women's History was founded in 1982 to promote the role of women in history as part of the national effort; and

WHEREAS, this organization has observed National Women's History Month in each and every year since its founding; and

WHEREAS, the Foundation for Hawaii Women's History has prepared an exhibit entitled "Extraordinary Women of Hawaii" which will be opened at the Hawaii State Public Library of March 9, 2001; and

WHEREAS, this worthy organization and Native Hawaiian Library of Alu Like, Inc., has prepared bookmarks for distribution to citizens for Hawaii during March 2001 which features some of Hawaii's extraordinary women; and

WHEREAS, this organization seeks to increase public awareness of the important role of women in history by encouraging government, business, and educational institutions and organizations to become involved in the celebration of National Women's History Month; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-First Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2001, that the Governor of the State of Hawaii declare March 2001 as Hawaii Womens' History Month in the State of Hawaii; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the Governor.
