SENATE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

supporting the collaborative efforts and the partnering initiatives between the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation and the Veterans Administration in hawaii to improve upon the quality, diversity, and accessibility of healthcare on the neighbor islands.

WHEREAS, the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation (HHSC) and the Veterans Administration in Hawaii (VA) continue to provide high quality, cost efficient healthcare for Hawaii residents and Hawaii veterans throughout the State; and

WHEREAS, the Hawaii VA and the HHSC diligently pursue new opportunities for increasing access to care, and improving on the quality and quantity of needed healthcare services for their beneficiaries even in the more remote and rural areas of Hawaii; and

WHEREAS, the HHSC provides healthcare services on five of Hawaii’s main islands, and is the sole provider of healthcare services on two islands, thereby making high quality healthcare convenient, affordable, and readily accessible to many thousands of Hawaii's citizens; and

WHEREAS, the Hawaii VA provides comprehensive primary care services to more than 112,000 veterans throughout the State, with more than 28,000 of those veterans living on neighbor islands, and the highest neighbor island concentration of veterans living in the Hilo area; and

WHEREAS, the patient populations served by both the HHSC and the Hawaii VA have a very large proportion of elderly beneficiaries who have limited income and limited access to long-term care; and

WHEREAS, the HHSC and the Hawaii VA are collaborating to jointly develop healthcare projects and programs that will better serve the needs of their beneficiaries on all islands of Hawaii; and

WHEREAS, the Hawaii VA and the HHSC have mutually agreed to develop partnerships on our neighbor islands, which will create greater access to care, increase health services, improve the quality of care, and bring about the greatest cost efficiencies; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-First Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2001, the House of Representatives concurring, that the Legislature strongly supports and wholeheartedly endorses the collaborative efforts and the partnering initiatives between Hawaii Health Systems Corporation and the Veterans Administration in Hawaii to continually improve upon the quality, diversity and accessibility to healthcare by Hawaii’s citizenry; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Veterans Administration in Hawaii and the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation are to be commended for their outstanding efforts to improve the overall quality of life for so many of our citizens, particularly on the neighbor islands, through the HHSC-VA partnering efforts to provide all of Hawaii with the best quality healthcare services possible; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation and the Veterans Administration.
