STAND. COM. REP. NO. 1717

Honolulu, Hawaii

, 2001

RE: H.C.R. No. 115

S.D. 1

Honorable Robert Bunda

President of the Senate

Twenty-First State Legislature

Regular Session of 2001

State of Hawaii

Sir:

Your Committee on Economic Development and Technology, to which was referred H.C.R. No. 115 entitled:

"HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE PACIFIC BASIN ECONOMIC COUNCIL AND ENCOURAGING EFFORTS TO HOLD THE 34TH INTERNATIONAL GENERAL MEETING IN HAWAII,"

begs leave to report as follows:

The purpose of this measure is to support the Pacific Basin Economic Council and encourage efforts to hold the 34th International General Meeting in Hawaii.

Your Committee received comments on this measure from the Department of Business, Economic Development, and Tourism.

Your Committee finds that last year, the Pacific Basin Economic Council (PBEC) drew a large number of distinguished business leaders from the Asia Pacific area and highlighted Hawaii as a place for major international conferences. The success of the PBEC meeting last year contributed in part to the State's ability to attract the Asian Development Bank Annual Meeting, which will be held this year. It is important that we keep up the momentum and do everything in our power to encourage PBEC to hold their annual meeting in Hawaii next year.

Your Committee has amended this measure by supporting development of a multicultural village in Kakaako to showcase Hawaii's international flavor to the PBEC, and by requesting the Hawaii Heritage Alliance Association to submit concrete plans of the multicultural village in Kakaako for review by the Legislature.

As affirmed by the record of votes of the members of your Committee on Economic Development and Technology that is attached to this report, your Committee concurs with the intent and purpose of H.C.R. No. 115, as amended herein, and recommends its adoption in the form attached hereto as H.C.R. No. 115, S.D. 1.

Respectfully submitted on behalf of the members of the Committee on Economic Development and Technology,
