STAND. COM. REP. NO.993

Honolulu, Hawaii

, 2001

RE: S.B. No. 552

S.D. 2

Honorable Robert Bunda

President of the Senate

Twenty-First State Legislature

Regular Session of 2001

State of Hawaii

Sir:

Your Committee on Ways and Means, to which was referred S.B. No. 552, S.D. 1, entitled:

"A BILL FOR AN ACT MAKING AN APPROPRIATION FOR A KOREAN WAR MUSEUM,"

begs leave to report as follows:

The purpose of this measure is to make an appropriation of general funds to the Department of Business, Economic Development, and Tourism for the establishment of a national Korean War Museum in Hawaii.

Your Committee finds that establishing a Korean War Museum in Hawaii is a testament to the major contribution that Hawaii and its residents made in the difficult and tragic Korean War. An appropriately designed and sited museum will serve both to recognize the sacrifices made by Hawaii's Korean War veterans and allow the children of this State to learn more of the complex history of what is often called "the unknown war" or "the forgotten victory".

Your Committee has amended this measure by:

(1) Requiring a match of $2 in federal funds for every $1 of state funds; and

(2) Making technical nonsubstantive amendments for the purposes of clarity and style.

As affirmed by the record of votes of the members of your Committee on Ways and Means that is attached to this report, your Committee is in accord with the intent and purpose of S.B. No. 552, S.D. 1, as amended herein, and recommends that it pass Third Reading in the form attached hereto as S.B. No. 552, S.D. 2.

Respectfully submitted on behalf of the members of the Committee on Ways and Means,
