HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

H.R. NO.

145

TWENTY-FIRST LEGISLATURE, 2002

STATE OF HAWAII

HOUSE RESOLUTION

REQUESTING SCHOOLS TO PERMIT STUDENTS TO OBSERVE A DAILY "TIME OUT" FOR PEACE.

WHEREAS, the Legislature finds that the world has forever changed since the tragedy of September 11, 2001 and the issues facing humanity and Hawaii grow more complex with each passing day; and

WHEREAS, our public education system strives to teach our children the skills necessary to survive in an increasingly complex world; and

WHEREAS, the growth of a child into a functional citizen, however, requires the child to begin to form personal opinions and a belief and value system concerning any number of issues in an increasingly complex world; and

WHEREAS, it is important to foster world peace and to allow for the personal growth of our children by providing an opportunity for students to observe a momentary "time out" in public schools; and

WHEREAS, it is hoped that students will take this opportunity to contemplate issues of importance to the individual student, to their community, state, and world, in how to make the world a better and more peaceful place; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2002, that all public schools in the State of Hawaii are encouraged to permit students to observe a daily "time out" for peace at the discretion of each individual student; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this

Resolution be transmitted to the Superintendent of Education and Chairperson of the Board of Education.
