HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

requesting a report on the status of the university of hawaii school of social work.

 

 

WHEREAS, social workers are trained professionals who use their skills to help individuals, families, and communities to address problems such as substance abuse, family conflicts, workplace tensions, health problems, disabilities, and mental health; and

WHEREAS, social workers practice in a wide variety of settings including family service agencies, community health centers, schools, hospitals, businesses, nursing homes, courts, prisons, and public and private agencies; and

WHEREAS, the University of Hawaii School of Social Work was established in 1940 and received provisional accreditation two years later for a one-year certificate program that developed into a baccalaureate program in 1977, then ultimately attained approval and an 8-year accreditation for a doctoral program in 1992; and

WHEREAS, the mission of the School of Social Work is, "to increase social justice and availability of opportunity for under-represented and oppressed groups" and "to contribute to the advancement of social work in its many forms for the purpose of preventing or resolving the most critical social problems"; and

WHEREAS, the School of Social Work has been without a dean since April 2000 and the search for a permanent dean was suspended indefinitely in August 2001; and

WHEREAS, the School of Social Work was scheduled for reaccreditation of its bachelor and masters degree programs in 2002 but was given an extension for one year; and

WHEREAS, all units of the University of Hawaii have been requested to submit a strategic plan by Spring 2002; and

WHEREAS, the administration, accreditation, and strategic planning processes of the School of Social Work are vital to the education and training of professional social workers who are needed to fulfill the diverse needs of our communities; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2002, that the University of Hawaii is requested to submit a report to the Legislature no later than 20 days prior to the convening of the Regular Session of 2003 on the status of:

(1) A renewed search for a dean for the School of Social Work;

(2) Progress in achieving reaccreditation; and

(3) The School of Social Work's strategic planning process in meeting the University's commitment to providing quality education for social workers in Hawaii;

and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the Board of Regents of the University of Hawaii.
