TWENTY-FIRST LEGISLATURE, 2001

S.D. 1

STATE OF HAWAII

A BILL FOR AN ACT

relating to kakaako community development.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1. The legislature finds that Kakaako has the potential to develop economically into a place where Hawaii residents, businesses, and tourists can all benefit. However, the legislature recognizes that in order to create a perfect balance, there needs to be oversight and organization in its economic development. The purpose of this Act is to require the Hawaii community development authority to contract with a private nonprofit entity to provide guidance in ensuring that the development of Kakaako reflects the many cultures of Hawaii, thus creating a Kakaako multicultural village, and to provide guidance in ensuring the development of an ocean park at Kakaako and the movement of Bishop Museum to Kakaako.

SECTION 2. The Hawaii community development authority shall contract with a private nonprofit entity to provide research and guidance to ensure that the projects in the Kakaako community development district incorporate Hawaii's many different cultures such that a multicultural village is created.

The private nonprofit entity shall provide research and guidance in the development of an ocean park and the movement of Bishop Museum to Kakaako.

SECTION 3. This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
