A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

RELATING TO HIGHER EDUCATION.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1. Chapter 305H, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:

"§305H- Post-secondary education entitlement scholarship program; established. (a) The commission shall establish through its rules a post-secondary education entitlement scholarship program for every financially deserving high school graduate in the State with a satisfactory grade point average. Graduates shall be entitled to use the scholarship to pay for tuition and fees and room and board at any campus of the University of Hawaii system or at any accredited private post-secondary institution in the State that accepts their applications for enrollment.

(b) The program shall be funded through the general fund."

SECTION 2. There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $ , or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2001-2002, for implementing the scholarship program established under this Act.

SECTION 3. The sum appropriated shall be expended by the University of Hawaii for the purposes of this Act.

SECTION 4. New statutory material is underscored.

SECTION 5. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2001.
