Description:

Appropriates funds for a tsunami public awareness campaign.

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

H.B. NO.

1209

TWENTY-THIRD LEGISLATURE, 2005

STATE OF HAWAII

A BILL FOR AN ACT

Making an appropriation for a tsunami public awareness campaign.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1. The legislature finds that the state is vulnerable to a host of disasters, both natural and man-made, and recognizes the importance of remaining vigilant in protecting residents and visitors from any disaster. Because these threats have the potential to cause great devastation, the legislature deems it vitally important to ensure that the State is adequately prepared to deal with any possible disaster. A legislative briefing on one particular type of natural disaster, a tsunami, has determined that the State and related private agencies have made great strides in being prepared to respond to a tsunami disaster. However, more resources are needed to educate the public on tsunami awareness.

The purpose of this Act is to provide for a tsunami public awareness campaign to better educate Hawaii residents and visitors on the proper actions to when the next tsunami strikes.

SECTION 2. There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $ or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2005-2006 to be used for a tsunami public awareness campaign to warn residents and visitors about the dangers of a tsunami and to educate them about proper evacuation plans.

The sum appropriated shall be expended by the department of defense for the purposes of this Act.

SECTION 3. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2005.
