HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

H.C.R. NO.

184

TWENTY-THIRD LEGISLATURE, 2005

H.D. 1

STATE OF HAWAII

HOUSE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

requesting the city and county of honolulu to cooperate with employers of the village park, upper waipahu, Waipio, and Gentry communities to arrange for adequate bus services to be provided for residents during the peak commute hours of the workday.

WHEREAS, the communities of Village Park and upper Waipahu have limited bus service, and there is no bus service for Royal Kunia and Kunia Road from Waipahu to Schofield Barracks, forcing the residents of these communities to drive to work, further clogging our highways; and

WHEREAS, the communities of Waipio and Gentry are also experiencing similar problems with limitations on bus service to their areas; and

WHEREAS, these areas are growing communities that continue to be developed and will experience significant increases in population; and

WHEREAS, many job opportunities are available along Kunia Road, in Waipahu and Wahiawa but the lack of adequate bus service prevents many prospective employees from being able to accept work there; and

WHEREAS, adequate bus services from these areas during the peak hours of the work day would permit some local residents to forgo the use of their cars, and others without cars to obtain jobs not otherwise available; and

WHEREAS, providing bus service to Royal Kunia, Village Park, Kunia Road, upper Waipahu, Waipio, Gentry, and Schofield Barracks would provide a necessary service to the residents, and accomplish the goal of reducing traffic and increasing employment in these areas; and

WHEREAS, the City and County of Honolulu and employers in these areas could work together to establish bus services at a minimum during peak employment commute times; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-third Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2005, the Senate concurring, that the Legislature requests that the City and County of Honolulu work together with employers in the Royal Kunia, Village Park, Kunia Road, Waipahu, Waipio, Gentry, and Schofield areas, to provide adequate bus service to those areas at least during the peak commute hours of the work day; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Mayor of the City and County of Honolulu and members of the Honolulu City Council.
