STATE OF HAWAII

HOUSE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

URGING THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION TO GRANT SCHOOL CREDIT TO STUDENTS WHO PARTICIPATE IN INTERSCHOLASTIC VARSITY SPORTS.

WHEREAS, the pursuit of excellence in all areas of human development, including the academic, artistic, civil, social, and athletic aspects, contributes to the enrichment of our culture and the overall well-being of our community; and

WHEREAS, the Department of Education fosters academic achievement, civic responsibility, and holistic development among its students; and

WHEREAS, participation on interscholastic varsity sports teams, like community service and political engagement, helps students develop skills and abilities that may not be learned through the academic disciplines or curricular activities of the regular school day; and

WHEREAS, in addition to cultivating sportsmanship, teamwork, and the pursuit of excellence, participation in varsity sports promotes development of the skills needed to collaborate with and build consensus among others to achieve a common goal, skills that play an important role in supporting and sustaining a vibrant democratic society guided by the values of productivity and interdependency; and

WHEREAS, high schools in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu grant one-quarter elective credit to students for each varsity sport in which they participate; and

WHEREAS, the importance of encouraging students to engage in electives, such as varsity sports, while simultaneously pursuing academic excellence, is evident; and

WHEREAS, elective school credits that can be applied toward a student's graduation requirement can provide the incentive for students to participate in varsity sports; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-third Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2005, the Senate concurring, that the Legislature of the State of Hawaii urges the Board of Education to create policies to grant elective school credit to students who participate in school-sanctioned interscholastic varsity sports; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the elective school credit these students receive shall apply toward their graduation requirements; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the Board of Education and the Superintendent of Education.
