SENATE RESOLUTION

 

REQUESTING THE BOARD OF EDUCATION AND THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION TO DEVELOP AND ESTABLISH A VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION PROGRAM IN EACH SCHOOL DISTRICT OF THE STATE.

WHEREAS, Hawaii's public schools use many parent and community volunteers to assist with a broad range of activities that may occur during school hours or after school hours; and

WHEREAS, school volunteers are an important part of the educational team, providing the support and additional resources that help Hawaii's public schools maintain quality educational programs and services; and

WHEREAS, school volunteers make a significant difference in the lives of students, sharing their knowledge, experience, skills, and time to promote academic and social growth and impart a sense of caring and community; and

WHEREAS, school volunteers come in many forms, including:

(1) Parents, grandparents, seniors, and other individuals who work directly with students, teachers, and administrators providing classroom and office assistance, field trip and special project assistance, tutoring, and mentoring; and

(2) Individuals, organizations, and business entities that make contributions to enhance student learning; and

(3) Students who tutor or mentor other students; and

WHEREAS, recognizing that the greatest gift one gives is one's self and one's time, it is vital that the State promote the value and appreciation of volunteer involvement in public education by recognizing volunteers who are making a positive difference in our schools; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-third Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2005, that the Department of Education and the Board of Education are requested to develop and establish a volunteer recognition program that will:

(1) Promote the value and appreciation of volunteer involvement in the public schools through activities that recognize volunteers and their contributions; and

(2) Be implemented in each school district across the State; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Superintendent of Education and the Chairperson of the Board of Education.
