SENATE RESOLUTION

 

REQUESTING THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TO report on THE USE OF DECORATIVE PLANTS AND TREES ALONG STATE HIGHWAYS AND ROADS.

 

WHEREAS, the State promotes the use of decorative plants and trees along many state highways and roadways; and

WHEREAS, decorative plants and trees provide a pleasant environment for motorists and adds to the beauty of Hawaii's neighborhoods and communities; and

WHEREAS, the use of some types of plants and trees, however, such as the Oleander and "Be-Still" trees that are poisonous may cause injury to state workers charged with their care; and

WHEREAS, these poisonous plants and trees may also propagate and spread to surrounding neighborhoods placing residents, especially children, at risk; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-Third Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2005, that the Department of Transportation is requested to report to the Legislature on the use of decorative plants and trees that are appropriate for planting along state highways and roads; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Transportation is requested to include in its report, any effects that the present use of poisonous plants have on maintenance workers charged with their care and the neighborhoods situated in the vicinity of these plants and trees; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Transportation is requested to report its findings and recommendations to the Legislature no later than twenty days prior to the convening of the Regular Session of 2006; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Governor and the Director of Transportation.
