HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

H.B. NO.

1552

TWENTY-FOURTH LEGISLATURE, 2007

STATE OF HAWAII

A BILL FOR AN ACT

relating to family.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1.  The legislature finds that the success of a society depends largely upon the vitality of its families.  Family is especially important in Hawaii because of the diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds of its people.  House Concurrent Resolution No. 269 (2006), requested the governor to designate and celebrate 2008 as the year of the family, and to establish a family celebration commission to administer the celebration.  The family celebration commission is responsible for developing, planning, and coordinating various programs and activities throughout 2008 in celebration of the family.

The legislature further finds that a celebration to honor the importance of family, and to sustain and nurture family life is appropriate.

The purpose of this Act is to appropriate funds for the operating costs of the family celebration commission.

SECTION 2.  There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $75,000, or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2007-2008, and the same sum, or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2008-2009, for the operating costs of the family celebration commission.

The sums appropriated shall be expended by the governor for the purposes of this Act.

SECTION 3.  The family celebration commission shall submit an interim report, including all of the programs and activities scheduled throughout 2008, to the legislature no later than twenty days prior to the convening of the 2008 regular session, and shall submit a final report to the legislature no later than twenty days prior to the convening of the 2009 regular session.

SECTION 4.  This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2007.
