HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

CONGRATULATING THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII WILLIAM S. RICHARDSON SCHOOL OF LAW ENVIRONMENTAL LAW PROGRAM FOR ITS OUTSTANDING WORK AND ACHIEVEMENTS IN THE FIELD OF ENVIRONMENTAL LEGAL EDUCATION AND FOR WINNING THE 2006 AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION AWARD FOR DISTINGUISHED ACHIEVEMENT IN ENVIRONMENTAL LAW AND POLICY.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, the natural beauty of Hawaii that is recognized throughout the world is also a fragile ecosystem that must be actively protected and preserved for future generations to enjoy; and

 

     WHEREAS, it was only appropriate that with its location on the spectacularly beautiful Hawaiian archipelago, the UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII WILLIAM S. RICHARDSON SCHOOL OF LAW establish a program of environmental law studies; and

 

     WHEREAS, since 1988, the ENVIRONMENTAL LAW PROGRAM has become a leader in environmental legal education, celebrated not only for its educational and scholarly components, but for training generations of outstanding environmental lawyers to serve their communities; and

 

     WHEREAS, the ENVIRONMENTAL LAW PROGRAM offers a diverse variety of courses in the field and provides many opportunities for students to develop practical legal skills through environmental law motto court teams, externships, pro bono projects, the Environmental Law Clinic, and summer jobs; and

 

     WHEREAS, students of the ENVIRONMENTAL LAW PROGRAM have worked with law firms across the nation in state and federal government offices including the Legislature and U.S. Department of Justice; public interest law firms and organizations including Earthjustice; and native Hawaiian interest groups such as the Native Hawaiian Legal Corporation; and

 

     WHEREAS, the success of the ENVIRONMENTAL LAW PROGRAM lies in a high quality of teaching, the vibrancy of its students, and international programs, as demonstrated by the many achievements of its outstanding faculty who have garnered national recognition, and its students who have been involved with the International Environmental Moot Court Team which has placed in the top ten in the world at the International Environmental Moot Court Competition more than once; and

 

     WHEREAS, the ENVIRONMENTAL LAW PROGRAM is also dynamic in its involvement in the community, initiating beach and stream cleanups and touring local facilities such as H-Power and the Tesoro Refinery to learn first-hand about the environmental industry; and

 

     WHEREAS, the ENVIRONMENTAL LAW PROGRAM has received the 2006 American Bar Association Award for Distinguished Achievement in Environmental Law and Policy, in recognition of its fine work and efforts in the field; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-fourth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2007, that this body hereby commends and congratulates the UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII WILLIAM S. RICHARDSON SCHOOL OF LAW ENVIRONMENTAL LAW PROGRAM for its exceptional work and achievements in the field of environmental legal education, and extends its warmest aloha and best wishes for continued success in all future endeavors.
