H.B. NO.

TWENTY-FOURTH LEGISLATURE, 2007

STATE OF HAWAII

A BILL FOR AN ACT

relating to education.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1.  The legislature recognizes that the Manoa public library will be closed for renovation work for a period of two years.  The legislature finds that the library is of great value to the public and particularly to the Manoa community, and is used frequently and constantly by Noelani elementary school students.  With the Manoa public library's closure there will be no reasonable alternative library in the vicinity, particularly for the students and the elderly.

The purpose of this Act is to compensate for the Manoa public library's temporary closure by providing two portable classrooms on the grounds of Noelani elementary school as an interim location for the library.

SECTION 2.  There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $500,000, or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2007-2008, and the same sum, or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2008-2009, to provide two portable classrooms to be located on Noelani elementary school grounds and to serve as the temporary location of the Manoa public library.

The sums appropriated shall be expended by the department of education for the purposes of this Act.

SECTION 3.  This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2007.
