     Your Committee has reviewed the personal histories, resumes, and statements submitted by the nominees, and finds Malia K.H. Akutagawa, Frances Cobb-Adams, Sue Ann M.M. Hasegawa, Kekamaikaikamaikalani Helm, Elroy K.M. Malo, Jersula L. Manaba, and Michelle Kananionapua Ayau Pescaia to have the requisite qualifications to be nominated to the Island Burial Council, Island of Molokai.

 

     Testimony in support of the nomination of Ms. Akutagawa was submitted by the Department of Land and Natural Resources, Hui Malama I Na Kupuna O Hawaii Nei, and three interested individuals.

 

     Ms. Akutagawa received her Bachelor's degree in Biology and Philosophy from Whitworth College and her Juris Doctor degree with an environmental law certificate from the William S. Richardson School of Law, University of Hawaii at Manoa.  Ms. Akutagawa is presently employed as the Director of the Molokai Rural Development Project.

 

     Testimony in support of the nomination of Ms. Cobb-Adams was submitted by the Department of Land and Natural Resources and Hui Malama I Na Kupuna O Hawaii Nei.

 

     Ms. Cobb-Adams currently serves as an interim member of the Island Burial Council for the Island of Molokai and as the Molokai Pathways/Hoomau Site Coordinator for Na Pua Noeau Center for Gifted and Talented Native Hawaiian Children.  She received her Bachelor's degree in Hawaiian Studies from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

 

     Testimony in support of the nomination of Ms. Hasegawa was submitted by the Department of Land and Natural Resources and Hui Malama I Na Kupuna O Hawaii Nei.

 

     Ms. Hasegawa currently serves as an interim member of the Island Burial Council for the Island of Molokai and is a distance education and technology instructor at the Molokai Education Center.  Ms. Hasegawa received her Bachelor's degree in Education and her Master's degree in Library Information and Science from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

 

     Testimony in support of the nomination of Mr. Helm was submitted by the Department of Land and Natural Resources, Hui Malama I Na Kupuna O Hawaii Nei, and one interested individual.

 

     Mr. Helm currently serves as an interim member of the Island Burial Council for the Island of Molokai and is a Community Building Facilitator with the Queen Liliuokalani Children's Center.  He has received his Certificate in Turf Grass Management from Maui Community College and has an exemplary background in Hawaiian cultural practices.

 

     Testimony in support of the nomination of Mr. Malo was submitted by the Department of Land and Natural Resources, Hui Malama I Na Kupuna O Hawaii Nei, and one interested individual.

 

     Mr. Malo currently serves as an interim member of the Island Burial Council for the Island of Molokai and if confirmed, will serve out the completion of the present term and an additional term through June 30, 2012.  He is currently a storyteller with Pacific Resources for Education and Learning, City and County of Honolulu, Artists in the Schools.  Mr. Malo has an extensive background in Hawaiian studies.

 

     Testimony in support of the nomination of Ms. Manaba was submitted by the Department of Land and Natural Resources and Hui Malama I Na Kupuna O Hawaii Nei.

 

     Ms. Manaba currently serves as an interim member of the Island Burial Council for the Island of Molokai and if confirmed, will serve out the completion of the present term and an additional term through June 30, 2012.  She is currently the Housing Manager at Hale Mahaolu Home.  She is a board member of the Molokai Occupational Center and Molokai Economic Opportunity Program.

 

     Testimony in support of the nomination of Ms. Pescaia was submitted by the Department of Land and Natural Resources and Hui Malama I Na Kupuna O Hawaii Nei.

 

     Ms. Pescaia currently serves as an interim member of the Island Burial Council for the Island of Molokai.  She is currently the Molokai Site Coordinator for Na Pua Noeau, Center for Gifted and Talented Native Hawaiian Children.  Ms. Pescaia has an extensive background in Hawaiian language and is known as a master storyteller.

 

     As affirmed by the records of votes of the members of your Committee on Agriculture and Hawaiian Affairs that are attached to this report, your Committee, after full consideration of the background, experience, and qualifications of the nominees, has found the nominees to be qualified for the positions to which nominated and recommends that the Senate advise and consent to the nominations.
