RE:    GOV. MSG. NO. 298

Honorable Colleen Hanabusa

President of the Senate

Twenty-Fourth State Legislature

Regular Session of 2008

State of Hawaii

Madam:

Your Committee on Commerce, Consumer Protection, and Affordable Housing, to which was referred Governor's Message No. 298, submitting for study and consideration the nomination of:

State Boxing Commission of Hawaii

G.M. No. 298

HENRY SASAKI,

for a term to expire 6-30-2012,

begs leave to report as follows:

Your Committee reviewed the personal history, resume, and statement submitted by the nominee, and finds Henry Sasaki to have the necessary qualifications to be nominated to the State Boxing Commission of Hawaii for a second term.

Testimony in support of Mr. Sasaki's nomination was submitted by the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, three members of the House of Representatives, and two private individuals.

Mr. Sasaki is a graduate of Farrington High School and is a retired federal civil service employee after serving over forty‑five years in the printing and publication industry, including over thirty years of service at United States Navy Publication & Printing Service Office at Pearl Harbor where he attained the position of General Foreman.

Mr. Sasaki has been associated with amateur and professional boxing for forty-four years in Hawaii, and has served as an amateur boxing coach and trainer.  He is the past President of the Amateur Boxing Association and has held various positions within amateur boxing in Hawaii.

Mr. Sasaki is an active and enthusiastic participant in Commission discussions and has been able to objectively evaluate the issues facing the Commission while balancing the interests of consumers and licensees.  Mr. Sasaki's demonstrated commitment, motivation, and depth and wealth of experience in boxing will greatly assist the State Boxing Commission of Hawaii.

As affirmed by the record of votes of the members of your Committee on Commerce, Consumer Protection, and Affordable Housing that is attached to this report, your Committee, after full consideration of the background, experience, and qualifications of the nominee, has found the nominee to be qualified for the position to which nominated and recommends that the Senate advise and consent to the nomination.

Respectfully submitted on behalf of the members of the Committee on Commerce, Consumer Protection, and Affordable Housing,
