     Your Committee on Commerce, Consumer Protection, and Affordable Housing, to which was referred Governor's Message No. 539, submitting for study and consideration the nomination of: 

 

Board of Speech Pathology and Audiology

begs leave to report as follows:

 

     Your Committee reviewed the personal history, resume, and statement submitted by the nominee, and finds Emi Isaki, Ph.D. to have the necessary qualifications to be nominated to the Board of Speech Pathology and Audiology.

 

     Testimony in support of Dr. Isaki's nomination was submitted by the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs.

 

     Dr. Isaki received her Bachelor of Science in Communication Disorders and her Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Utah.  She subsequently received her Doctorate in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Arizona.  She currently serves as a tenure track Assistant Professor and as the Adult Neurogenic Clinic Director at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.  Prior to her joining the faculty at the University of Hawaii, she served as a per diem Speech-Language Pathologist at several medical centers in Tucson, Arizona.

 

     Dr. Isaki is the recipient of several honors and awards for her work in speech pathology and is professionally affiliated with the Association of Neurogenic Communication Disorders, the Brain Injury Association of Hawaii, the National Aphasia Association, the Hawaii Speech-Language-Hearing Association, and the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.  She also has participated in an extensive list of professional activities as well as authored several published works.

 

     Dr. Isaki is focused on consumers and patients, and how Board decisions affect them.  She demonstrates familiarity with the current issues in the profession and facing the Board.  Her skills and expertise include evaluating important clinical issues, participating in group decision making, interacting with other professionals, evaluating and treating clients with communication disorders, providing an academic perspective to issues, working with other organizations in the community, and professional writing.  Dr. Isaki's demonstrated commitment, motivation, teaching background, education, and professional experiences will greatly assist the Board of Speech Pathology and Audiology.

 

     As affirmed by the record of votes of the members of your Committee on Commerce, Consumer Protection, and Affordable Housing that is attached to this report, your Committee, after full consideration of the background, experience, and qualifications of the nominee, has found the nominee to be qualified for the position to which nominated and recommends that the Senate advise and consent to the nomination.
