HOUSE RESOLUTION
honoring the sisters of the sacred hearts on the occasion of their sesquicentennial anniversary.
WHEREAS, the SISTERS OF THE SACRED HEARTS, also known as the Sisters of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, are celebrating the 150th Anniversary of their arrival in Hawaii on May 4, 2009; and
WHEREAS, the SISTERS OF THE SACRED HEARTS arrived in Hawaii on May 4, 1859, to provide Catholic education for Hawaii's children; and
WHEREAS, during the past 150 years, thousands of Hawaii's youth have received the benefit of a well-rounded education based on Christian principles and moral living due to the devotion and dedication of the SISTERS OF THE SACRED HEARTS at Sacred Hearts Convent at Fort Street, Honolulu; Sacred Hearts Academy (Academy), Kaimuki, Honolulu; St. Anthony Home, Kalihi, Honolulu; Sacred Hearts Convent, Nuuanu, Honolulu; St. Theresa School, Honolulu; Our Lady of Peace School, Honolulu; Immaculate Conception School, Lihue, Kauai; and St. Patrick School, Kaimuki, Honolulu; and
WHEREAS, St. Anthony Retreat and Conference Center, formerly known as Kalihi Orphanage and St Anthony's Home, is also commemorating the 100th anniversary of its founding on September 29, 2009; and
WHEREAS, the Academy is also commemorating the 100th anniversary of its founding on September 5, 2009; and
WHEREAS, the Academy is Hawaii's largest all-girls school, cultivating young women for their role as confident adults, capable of participating in and contributing to an ever-changing world; and
WHEREAS, the Academy's diverse college preparatory curriculum results in 100 percent of its graduates moving on to higher education; and
WHEREAS, this diverse curriculum includes a growing arts program, enhanced by the unveiling of the Mother Louise Henriette Performing Arts Center, and a robotics program awarded with the Rookie All-Star Award at the national FIRST Regional Robotics Competition; and
WHEREAS, the Academy also remains a force for character, intellect, and faith (with Sacred Hearts students annually logging an extraordinary 60,000 hours of community service), and was honored as a 2007 National School of Character; and
WHEREAS, the people of Hawaii wish to convey their sincerest appreciation to the SISTERS OF THE SACRED HEARTS for their many years of service and devotion; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-fifth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2009, that this body, on behalf of the grateful people of Hawaii, extends its heartiest congratulations and good wishes to the SISTERS OF THE SACRED HEARTS on the occasion of the sesquicentennial celebration of their arrival in Hawaii, and on the centennial celebrations of the founding of St. Anthony Retreat and Conference Center and Sacred Hearts Academy, and maintains the fervent hope that they will continue their good works in the education of our youth and in their service to the people of Hawaii; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Superior General of the Sisters of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts and the Provincial Superior of the Sisters of the Sacred Hearts Pacific Province.
