HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

H.B. NO.

2063

TWENTY-FIFTH LEGISLATURE, 2010

STATE OF HAWAII

A BILL FOR AN ACT

RELATING TO THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

The legislature finds that the University of Hawaii's Shidler College of Business' Doctoral Program in International Management is important to the State's economy because it encourages foreign-born graduates from Asian countries, many of which have growing economies and investment opportunities, to invest in Hawaii businesses.  The recent downturn in the economy, however, has resulted in funding cuts that threaten the participation of the three doctoral candidates in the program.

The legislature also finds that ensuring the program's viability will help the Shidler College of Business maintain its current U.S. News and World Report top twenty-five ranking and that this endeavor is in the public's interest, as it will benefit the State's economy and the University of Hawaii system.  The purpose of this measure is to provide funds to maintain the University of Hawaii Shidler College of Business' Doctoral Program in International Management viability by providing assistance to the program's doctoral candidates.

SECTION 2.  There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $          or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2010-2011 to assist three doctoral candidates in the University of Hawaii's Shidler College of Business' Doctoral Program in International Management as follows:

     Salary                                              $

     Housing stipend                                     $

     Human resources costs                               $

     Tuition waiver                                      $

                   Total                                $

The sum appropriated shall be expended by the University of Hawaii for the purposes of this Act.

SECTION 3.  This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2010.
