A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

 

relating to elections.

 

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 


     SECTION 1.  Chapter 11, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:

     "§11-     Candidates for public office; state and county district residency requirements.  For any election conducted after July 1, 2012, a person who becomes a candidate for public office shall reside in the state or county district of the office sought for not less than six consecutive months immediately preceding the date upon which nomination papers become available pursuant to section 12-2.5.  The chief election officer may adopt rules pursuant to chapter 91 relating to the manner of establishing proof of district residency."

     SECTION 2.  New statutory material is underscored.

     SECTION 3.  This Act shall take effect upon its approval and shall apply to candidates for elections held after July 1, 2012.

Elections; District Residency Requirement

 

Description:

Requires any candidate for state or county office to have resided within the district of the office sought for at least 6 months prior to the availability of nomination papers.  Effective upon approval and applies to candidates for elections held after 7/1/12.
