HOUSE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

 

urging the Hawaii Teacher Standards board to establish a program to select and evaluate activities relating to the professional development of teachers.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, ensuring that teachers have access to professional development and continuing education contributes to nurturing higher quality teachers and improved learning in the classroom; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board (Board) establishes licensing standards that govern teacher licensing in Hawaii; and

 

     WHEREAS, the powers and duties of the Board also include approving teacher education programs that meet the standards established by the Board; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Board is also authorized to conduct professional development activities related to its standards; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Board currently does not select continuing teacher education programs; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-seventh Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2013, the Senate concurring, that the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board is urged to establish a program to select and evaluate activities related to the professional development of teachers; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board is urged to adopt rules governing the procedures and criteria for the selection and periodic evaluation of the professional development activities and any contractors who are selected to conduct professional development activities for teachers; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Executive Director and the Chairperson of the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board, and the Superintendent of Education.
