HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

congratulaTING ELIZABETH "LIBBY" YOUNG for her numerous achievements and outstanding contribution to the field of journalism.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, the people of Hawaii take great pride in recognizing and honoring the notable achievements and contributions of educators who, through their extraordinary dedication and proficiency in a field of study, significantly improve the quality of education of their students; and

 

     WHEREAS, ELIZABETH "LIBBY" YOUNG is a journalism and English professor at Windward Community College who has led students to high achievement; she has brought national attention to the Windward campus through its journalism program and multiple award-winning newspaper, Ka ‘Ohana; its students have also earned internships from the Society of Professional Journalists – Hawaii Chapter; and

 

     WHEREAS, ELIZABETH "LIBBY" YOUNG has been repeatedly honored for her accomplishments in the field of journalism, and has shown initiative, creativity, and productivity at Windward Community College in Kaneohe, maintaining the high standards of teaching excellence and establishing a learning environment that creates an exuberance for learning among students; and

 

     WHEREAS, ELIZABETH "LIBBY" YOUNG is the recipient of several awards, including the prestigious 1995 Carnegie Foundation Professor of the Year award for Hawaii, and was selected as one of “Ten Who Made a Difference” statewide in 1991 by the former Honolulu Star-Bulletin; she also received the 1990 Excellence in Teaching Award, given annually by the University of Hawaii Board of Regents for outstanding contributions in a field of study; and

     WHEREAS, despite ELIZABETH "LIBBY" YOUNG'S many academic responsibilities, she has dedicated time to serving as president of the Hawaii Literary Arts Council, and founded the noted statewide Star Poets literacy project in partnership with Starbucks Coffee; she was also one of the earliest recipients of the Windward Community College Provost Award for Outstanding Service; and

 

     WHEREAS, ELIZABETH "LIBBY" YOUNG served as the first public information officer for the UH Community College system from 1970 to 1976; four years later, after transferring to Windward Community College, she was named as one of several promising researchers in the nation by the National Council of Teachers of English for her master’s thesis, which studied how professional journalists form their ledes; and

 

     WHEREAS, ELIZABETH "LIBBY" YOUNG'S teaching was not confined to the classroom as she encouraged her students to engage in community issues; with the help of students, faculty, and community leaders, as well as the support of Windward legislators, she mounted a successful fundraising campaign at the State Capitol that resulted in securing millions of dollars for Windward Community College’s master plan, including a state-of-the art learning center and library; and

 

     WHEREAS, in May of this year, ELIZABETH "LIBBY" YOUNG will be retiring from Windward Community College after 35 years of outstanding service, leaving indelible imprints on those who were fortunate to have been enriched by her guidance, compassion, and intellect; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-eighth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2015, that this body hereby congratulates ELIZABETH “LIBBY” YOUNG for her numerous achievements and outstanding contribution to the field of journalism, and extends to her its warmest aloha and best wishes for continued success in all future endeavors.
