A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

 

RELATING TO EDUCATION.

 

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 


     SECTION 1.  The Read to Me International Foundation was incorporated in March 1996 as a result of a partnership created by leading members of the business, labor, education, faith-based, and community sectors.  The corporation operates as a charitable organization pursuant to section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, as amended.

     The organization's mission is to share the love and joy of reading aloud.  The Read to Me International Foundation promotes reading aloud to children through:

     (1)  Presentations and workshops for parents, educators, and other interested groups;

     (2)  Reading sessions at schools and community gatherings;

     (3)  Biennial conferences; and

     (4)  Support for parents of young children living in transitional and affordable housing.

     The purpose of this Act is to advance public education by appropriating moneys to support the Read to Me International Foundation in its promotion of reading aloud to children.

     SECTION 2.  There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $         or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2016-2017 to support the Read to Me International Foundation for the promotion of reading aloud to children.

     The sum appropriated shall be expended by the department of education for the purposes of this Act.

     SECTION 3.  This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2050.
