A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

 

relating to indigenous peoples' day.

 

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 


     SECTION 1.  Section 8-1.5, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended to read as follows:

     "[[]§8-1.5[]]  [Discoverers'] Indigenous Peoples' Day.  The second Monday in October shall be known as [Discoverers'] Indigenous Peoples' Day, in recognition of the:

     (1)  Polynesian [discoverers] founders of the indigenous culture of the Hawaiian Islands[,];

     (2)  Accomplishments of the indigenous voyagers who traveled to and settled the numerous islands in the Pacific Ocean more than one thousand years before Christopher Columbus was born;

     (3)  Countless indigenous people who perished worldwide as a result of confrontations with Europeans; and

     (4)  The continued survival of the descendants of indigenous people worldwide.

     Indigenous Peoples' Day shall serve to educate the general public on the State's obligations to the native people of Hawaii, including the State's continued protection of all rights customarily and traditionally exercised by the descendants of those native people.

     SECTION 2.  Statutory material to be repealed is bracketed and stricken.  New statutory material is underscored.

     SECTION 3.  This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
