A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

 

rELATING TO cORAL.

 

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 


     SECTION 1.  The University of Hawaii shall conduct a study on the effects of sunscreen used by swimmers and other ocean users on the coral reefs located in Hawaii waters.  The study shall include recommendations on how to mitigate the detrimental effects to coral, if any, caused by sunscreen, giving due consideration to the need to protect the coral reefs and the possible impact that mitigation measures may have on residents and visitors who use sunscreen.

     SECTION 2.  There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $         or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2017-2018 to study the effects of sunscreen on coral reefs in Hawaii waters.

     The sum appropriated shall be expended by the University of Hawaii for the purposes of this Act.

     SECTION 3.  The University of Hawaii shall submit a preliminary report to the legislature no later than twenty days prior to the convening of the regular session of 2018 and a final report to the legislature no later than twenty days prior to the convening of the regular session of 2019.  The reports may include proposed legislation.

     SECTION 4.  This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2017.
