HOUSE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

 

urging the Department of education to carry on its work to better engage community groups in the education of children and youth in hawaii's public schools.

 

 


     WHEREAS, community engagement is essential to moving the educational and learning initiatives in Hawaii forward; and

 

     WHEREAS, the federal Every Student Succeeds Act, enacted in 2015, helps to develop and grow local educational innovations, including partnerships between local leaders and educators; and

 

     WHEREAS, the federal Every Student Succeeds Act, enacted in 2015, places emphasis on providing assistance to state educational agencies and community based organizations that support student academic achievement; and

 

     WHEREAS, public-private partnerships with community groups have made a positive impact in public schools throughout the State in many areas, including language education, STEM education, scholarships, and technological educational resources; and

 

     WHEREAS, many community organizations in the State are willing and able to help the Department of Education by providing real life skills and educational, hands on, experiential learning opportunities as partners and community resources that support Hawaii's public school teachers and their students; and

 

     WHEREAS, every public middle and intermediate school student in Hawaii deserves the opportunity to access a safe, quality after-school program that supports student health, safety, and overall well-being as well as their learning and growth by creating a seamless learning day in ways that connect students to their families, community, and the aina, and reflect the diversity of Hawaii's student population; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-ninth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2017, the Senate concurring, that this body urges the Department of Education to carry on its work to better engage community groups in the education of children and youth in Hawaii's public schools; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the Board of Education, Superintendent of Education, and Director of the Community Engagement Office of the Department of Education.
