HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

Congratulating the 2017 STATE TEACHERs of the year:  SUNG MAN PARK as the hawaii state teacher of the year, Kay Beach as the Public Charter School Teacher of the year, Tracey Idica AS THE CENTRAL DISTRICT TEACHER OF THE YEAR, Luane Higuchi AS THE LEEWARD DISTRICT TEACHER OF THE YEAR, Kristi Kusunoki AS THE Windward DISTRICT TEACHER OF THE YEAR, Laurie Ann O’Brien AS THE HAWAII DISTRICT TEACHER OF THE YEAR, Jennifer Suzuki AS THE MAUI DISTRICT TEACHER OF THE YEAR, and David Mireles as the KAUAI DISTRICT TEACHER OF THE YEAR.

 

 

 


                WHEREAS, SUNG MAN PARK, the 2017 Hawaii State Teacher of the Year, teaches at Washington Middle School and was selected from more than 11,400 educators within the state; he strives to be a positive role model for students, in addition to providing students with an education that produces extraordinary results; and

 

                WHEREAS, KAY BEACH, the 2017 Public Charter School Teacher of the Year, teaches at the School for Examining Essential Questions of Sustainability and emphasizes openness, empathy, and values in her teaching approach while also having her students think critically and use research; and

 

WHEREAS, TRACEY IDICA, the 2017 Central District Teacher of the Year, teaches at Aiea High School and encourages her students to “dream big and make a difference”; TRACEY IDICA serves her community and colleagues as a teacher lobbyist who communicates with local and congressional representatives about school-level concerns; and

 

     WHEREAS, LUANE HIGUCHI, the 2017 Leeward District Teacher of the Year, teaches at Waianae Intermediate School and has used her digital media techniques to “pay it forward” through extracurricular activities including traveling with students to competitions and award ceremonies; and

 

     WHEREAS, KRISTI KUSUNOKI, the 2017 Windward District Teacher of the Year, teaches at Kailua Intermediate School and organizes musical events to increase music literacy and to highlight the talents of her students; and

 

     WHEREAS, LAURIE ANN O’BRIEN, the 2017 Hawaii District Teacher of the Year, teaches at Keaau High School and believes that good teaching requires adaptation and relevance; LAURIE ANN O’BRIEN is pioneering a new computer science course this year to further her students’ understanding and preparation for the real world; and

 

     WHEREAS, JENNIFER SUZUKI, the 2017 Maui District Teacher of the Year, teaches at Maui Waena Intermediate School and emphasizes performance-based, real-work opportunities for her students; JENNIFER SUZUKI produces and invites her community to an annual Technology Bazaar that showcases the talents of her students in video, robotics, and other projects; and

 

     WHEREAS, DAVID MIRELES, the 2017 Kauai District Teacher of the Year, teaches at Kapaa High School and plans development workshops for his peers to improve technology integration, teaching methodology, and pedagogy; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-Ninth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2017, that this body hereby commends, congratulates, and honors SUNG MAN PARK, KAY BEACH, TRACEY IDICA, LUANE HIGUCHI, KRISTI KUSUNOKI, LAURIE ANN O'BRIEN, JENNIFER SUZUKI, and DAVID MIRELES for their outstanding accomplishments and much-deserved recognition, and extends to all of them its sincere mahalo and best wishes for continued success in all future endeavors.
