A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

 

relating to the university of hawaii.

 

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 


     SECTION 1.  The legislature finds that the University of Hawaii is one of the most significant economic drivers in the State.  Additionally, it is the State’s leading engine for economic growth and diversification, stimulating the local economy with jobs, research, and skilled workers.

     The legislature finds that supporting and growing industries on neighbor islands is a matter of statewide concern.

     The legislature finds that Lahaina is an economic center for culinary arts and tourism.  Developing work and academic skills for students at this economic center will support a workforce pipeline.

     The purpose of this Act is to support the relocation of the University of Hawaii Maui College culinary arts program to Lahaina by:

     (1)  Appropriating funds for the planning and design of facilities for a culinary arts program under the University of Hawaii Maui College in Lahaina; and

     (2)  Requiring the University of Hawaii Maui College to collaborate with hotels, resorts, and landowners of adjacent properties to develop a plan for the relocation of the University of Hawaii Maui College culinary arts program to Lahaina.

     SECTION 2.  There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $         or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2018-2019 for the design of facilities and planning for the relocation of the University of Hawaii Maui College culinary arts program to Lahaina.

     The sum appropriated shall be expended by the University of Hawaii for the purposes of this Act.

     SECTION 3.  The chancellor of the University of Hawaii Maui College shall meet with representatives from hotels and resorts in Lahaina and landowners of properties in and adjacent to Lahaina to develop a plan for the relocation of the University of Hawaii Maui College to Lahaina.

     SECTION 4.  The University of Hawaii Maui College shall submit a report of its findings and plan to move the culinary arts program, including any proposed legislation, to the legislature no later than twenty days prior to the convening of the regular session of 2019.

     SECTION 5.  This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2018.
