Introduction
The Hawai‘i State Senate and House of Representatives met in joint session on March 18, 2009 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Hawai‘i Admissions Act 50 years earlier by President Dwight Eisenhower.
The Hawaii Legislature created “Fifty Years of Legislative History” to commemorate our State’s 50th anniversary of statehood being celebrated on August 21, 2009. We have compiled our history by decades, beginning with the First Legislature, which convened after statehood was approved in 1959 and concluded in 1962. Thereafter, within the decades, each two-year legislature contains information on both Senate and House members, including their: political affiliation, district, and leadership or committee chair assignments. In addition to specific information about the members, we have summarized legislative actions in policy areas that were the leading issues of that period. By no means is this summary exhaustive, but includes the top-of-mind issues during that time period.
Our hope is that these pages offer an educational tour through the Hawaii legislature during the past fifty years. Mahalo nui loa to the Senate and House staff who volunteered to assist with this project.
