                     A BILL FOR AN ACT

MAKING AN APPROPRIATION FOR SECURITY PERSONNEL IN THE COURTS OF
   THE STATE.



BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 1      SECTION 1.  The department of public safety may establish
 
 2 twenty-seven permanent deputy sheriff positions in fiscal year
 
 3 1999-2000 and twenty-seven permanent deputy sheriff positions in
 
 4 fiscal year 2000-2001 to provide enhanced security exclusively
 
 5 for the courts of the state.  These positions shall be exempt
 
 6 from chapters 76 and 77, Hawaii Revised Statutes.
 
 7      SECTION 2.  There is appropriated out of the general
 
 8 revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $           or so much
 
 9 thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 1999-2000 and the sum
 
10 of $           or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal
 
11 year 2000-2001 to provide additional security personnel in the
 
12 courts of the State, including the establishment of permanent
 
13 deputy sheriff positions in the department of public safety. 
 
14      SECTION 3.  The sums appropriated shall be expended by the
 
15 department of public safety for the purposes of this Act.
 
16      SECTION 4.  This Act shall take effect on July 1, 1999.
