                   A  BILL  FOR  AN  ACT

MAKING AN APPROPRIATION FOR THE HALEIWA ARTS FESTIVAL.



BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 1      SECTION 1.  Haleiwa is a beautiful place to spend a day with
 
 2 family and friends.  The Haleiwa Arts Festival aims to be an
 
 3 occasion in which both residents and tourists will take that
 
 4 opportunity.
 
 5      The first Haleiwa Arts Festival was held in July 1998 and
 
 6 was designed to provide a new venue for fine artists in all media
 
 7 to show their original works.  The festival was a tremendous
 
 8 success and local merchants experienced an increase in revenues.
 
 9 The Haleiwa Arts Festival is again scheduled for July in 1999.
 
10 Entertainment in other mediums including hula, musicians,
 
11 culinary artists, storytellers, and historians will be located
 
12 throughout Haleiwa.  Select artists will demonstrate their
 
13 talents.  It will be a festival unlike any other because of the
 
14 natural beauty of Haleiwa that provides a picturesque backdrop.
 
15      The Haleiwa Arts Festival will feature traditional and
 
16 contemporary artists from the North Shore and around the State as
 
17 well as works from students at local high schools.  The two-day
 
18 arts festival plans to be an annual event.  Restaurants and
 
19 businesses in Haleiwa Town are working together with artists to

 1 organize this event into a new world-class art festival.
 
 2      The addition of the Haleiwa Arts Festival will benefit the
 
 3 local community by exposing residents to art education and
 
 4 awareness and provide a new economic opportunity for the State.
 
 5      SECTION 2.  There is appropriated out of the general
 
 6 revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $10,000, or so much
 
 7 thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 1999-2000, for the
 
 8 Haleiwa Arts Festival.
 
 9      SECTION 3.  The sum appropriated shall be expended by the
 
10 state foundation on culture and the arts for the purposes of this
 
11 Act.
 
12      SECTION 4.  This Act shall take effect on July 1, 1999.
