                     HOUSE CONCURRENT
                        RESOLUTION

REQUESTING THE HAWAII TOURISM AUTHORITY TO INCLUDE SPORTS TOURISM
IN ITS LONG-RANGE PLAN FOR TOURISM.

1 WHEREAS, due to greater competition from other visitor
2 destinations and decreasing visitor arrivals and visitor
3 spending in the State, more than ever before, Hawaii's tourism
4 industry must be expanded beyond its traditional markets, in
5 such areas as sports tourism, edutourism, and ecotourism, to
6 give greater dimension, growth, and stability to this economic
 7 generator; and
 8
9 WHEREAS, one of the areas that shows particular potential
10 and opportunity for strengthening and diversifying the State's
11 tourism industry is in the niche area of sports tourism,
12 especially as Hawaii is regarded as among the world's best
13   places for sports in general and outdoor sports specifically;
14 and
15
16 WHEREAS, it is well-known that established sporting events,
17 such as the NFL Pro Bowl, the Aloha Bowl, the Ironman
18 Triathlon, the Honolulu Marathon, Hawaii Winter League
19 Baseball, the PGA Grand Slam of Golf, and the Sony Hawaiian
20 Open, not only promote Hawaii as a desirable visitor
21 destination through national and international television
22 exposure but enhance Hawaii's image as a health and fitness
23 center; and
24
25 WHEREAS, besides these established sporting events, sports
26 such as canoeing, beach volleyball, kayaking, and indoor
27 football also show promise for the State; and
28
29 WHEREAS, boosting sports tourism would also stimulate
30 business activity, create jobs, and contribute to other local
31 industries in the State; and
32
33 WHEREAS, however, for sports tourism to be fully
34 established as a viable and constant part of Hawaii's tourism
35 industry, it must be included in the State's overall tourism
36 marketing plan and strategy; now, therefore,

9 pursuant to this Concurrent Resolution to the Legislature no
10 later than twenty days before the convening of the Regular

13 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this
