                     HOUSE  RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING KENNETH F. BROWN UPON HIS RETIREMENT AS CHAIRMAN
   OF THE QUEEN'S HEALTH SYSTEMS AND AS TRUSTEE FOR THE QUEEN
   EMMA FOUNDATION, MOLOKA`I GENERAL HOSPITAL, QUEEN'S
   INTERNATIONAL CORPORATION, AND THE QUEEN EMMA COMMUNITY
   HEALTH.



 1       WHEREAS, Hawaii is endowed with sage leaders who serve
 2   their State and its people with courage, vision, and
 3   commitment; and
 4   
 5       WHEREAS, for more than three decades, KENNETH F. BROWN has
 6   dedicated his leadership, patience, and efforts to public
 7   service in the State, performing admirably and effectively,
 8   since his acceptance to serve on the Board of The Queen's
 9   Medical Center in 1965, and through his role as Chairman of the
10   Queen's Health System for more than nine years; and
11   
12       WHEREAS, due particularly to his leadership, dedication,
13   and untiring efforts, KENNETH F. BROWN has helped to evolve The
14   Queen's Medical Center into a comprehensive health care system
15   which encompasses hospitals, clinics, home care services,
16   laboratories, health plans, specialized treatment facilities,
17   community health programs, as well the State's only medical
18   library; and
19   
20       WHEREAS, aside of serving Hawaii as a State Senator for six
21   years, this exemplary individual became involved in the growth
22   of many worthwhile island institutions such as:  The Waiaha
23   Foundation, Tutu's House, Hawaii Health Foundation, East-West
24   Center, Hawaii Community Development Authority, Bishop Museum,
25   Boys and Girls Club of Honolulu, Japan-America Society of
26   Honolulu, John A. Burns Foundation, Hawaiian Open Golf
27   Tournament, Hawaii Nature Center, Hawaii Maritime Center,
28   Historic Hawaii Foundation, HUGS, Oahu Development Conference,
29   Ocean Policy Institute, The Marimed Foundation, and numerous
30   business boards, and has been the inspiration for the statewide
31   sail of the Hokule`a, the founding of the Polynesian Union
32   Conference and the creation of mentoring programs in three
33   Hawaii schools based on the Tu Tangata Way from Aotearoa; and

 1       WHEREAS, among the honors achieved by KENNETH F. BROWN,
 2   recognition include:  being named "Living Treasure" by the
 3   Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii and "Kamaaina of the Year" by
 4   the Historic Hawaii Foundation; presented with the National
 5   March of Dimes' Lifetime Achievement Award, the Hawaii Red
 6   Cross' Humanitarian of the Year Award, the Gordon W. Bradley
 7   Humanitarian Award by the American Institute of Architects, the
 8   Na Po`okela Award from the Year of the Hawaiian, the David Malo
 9   Award by the Rotary Club of West Honolulu, and the Kaonohi
10   Award from Papa Ola Lokahi; and
11   
12       WHEREAS, to the dismay of those fortunate enough to have
13   had their lives enriched by the legacy of his efficient
14   administration, courteous disposition, and sincere compassion,
15   KENNETH F. BROWN retired on January 4, 1999 from his position
16   as chairman of The Queen's Health Systems, and as trustee of
17   The Queen Emma Foundation, Moloka'i General Hospital, Queen's
18   International Corporation, and The Queen Emma Community Health;
19   now, therefore,
20   
21       BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the
22   Twentieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session
23   of 1999, that this body hereby applauds and commends KENNETH F.
24   BROWN for his lifetime commitment and dedication to improving
25   the quality of life for the people of Hawaii and congratulates
26   him upon his retirement from the Queen's Health System.
