          electing members of the board of education.

          Proposes to make the student member of the Board of Education
          a voting member.

SB 473    PROPOSING AMENDMENTS TO ARTICLE X OF THE            EDU,JDC
          CONSTITUTION OF THE STATE OF HAWAII TO ABOLISH THE STATE BOARD
          OF EDUCATION AND REPLACE IT WITH DISTRICT BOARDS OF EDUCATION
          THAT ARE ELECTED AT-LARGE AND IN A NONPARTISAN MANNER BY THE
          QUALIFIED VOTERS OF SCHOOL DISTRICTS, AND A STATE DIRECTOR OF
          EDUCATION APPOINTED BY THE GOVERNOR
          Proposes amendments to Article X of the Constitution of the
          State of Hawaii to abolish the state board of education and
          replace it with district boards of education that are elected
          atin a nonpartisan manner by the qualified voters of school
          districts that are established by law.

SB 574    PROPOSING AMENDMENTS TO THE HAWAII CONSTITUTION    EDU, JDC
          RELATING TO EDUCATION
          Proposes amendments to the Hawaii Constitution to abolish the
          board of education and provide for the election of the
          superintendent of education.

          Establishes a local district school board in each departmental
          school district to respond to recommendations, resolutions,
          and suggestions from the BOE and the superintendent, and to
          work with the district superintendent of the school district

 
          represented by the local district school board on matters
          concerning education.

SB 174    MAKING AN APPROPRIATION FOR THE PEER EDUCATION  HHS/EDU, WAM
          PROGRAM
          Appropriates funds to maintain and expand the services
          provided by the department of health's peer education program.

                  No oral testimony will be taken.


Persons wishing to testify should submit 25 copies of their testimony to
the committee clerk, Room 215, State Capitol, 24 hours prior to the
hearing. Please punch three (3) holes on the side of 10 copies and two (2)
holes on the top of 15 copies of your testimony. Testimony may also be
faxed if less than 5 pages in length, to the Senate Sergeant-At-Arms Office
at 586-6659 or 1-800-586-6659 (toll free for neighbor islands), at least 24
hours prior to the hearing.  When faxing, please indicate to whom the
testimony is being submitted, the date and time of the hearing, and the
required number of copies needed for submittal.

If you require special assistance or auxiliary aids or services to
participate in the public hearing process (i.e., sign language interpreter,
wheelchair accessibility, or parking designated for the disabled), please
contact the committee clerk 24 hours prior to the hearing so arrangements
can be made.

Public Folder.  A folder labeled "Public Folder" containing the measures
and testimonies for the hearing will be available for shared use by members
of the public.
