                   A  BILL  FOR  AN  ACT

RELATING TO THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII.



BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 1      SECTION 1.  Section 304-13, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is
 
 2 amended to read as follows:
 
 3      "�304-13  Classification schedule.  The board of regents
 
 4 shall classify all members of the faculty of the university
 
 5 including research workers, extension agents, and all personnel
 
 6 engaged in instructional work, or other employees of the
 
 7 university as defined in section 76-16 and adopt a classification
 
 8 [schedule conforming, as nearly as may be practical, to the
 
 9 schedules set forth in chapter 77.  The department of human
 
10 resources development of the State shall, upon the request of the
 
11 board of regents, render such assistance as may be practicable in
 
12 connection with such classification.  The adjustments of
 
13 compensation to conform with the classification shall be made in
 
14 general accordance, so far as may be practical, with chapter 77,
 
15 relating to state employees.] system that appropriately
 
16 recognizes the scope and subject matter of work, scope and degree
 
17 of responsibility, and qualification requirements.
 
18      Annual increases of compensation shall be allowable, and
 
19 shall be allowed, in general accordance, so far as may be

 1 practical, [with chapter 77,] providing for the allowance of
 
 2 annual increases to state employees for efficient service, and
 
 3 the board of regents shall adopt a fair and reasonable plan for
 
 4 rating the efficiency of individual employees affected by this
 
 5 section."
 
 6      SECTION 2.  Statutory language to be repealed is bracketed.
 
 7 New statutory material is underscored.
 
 8      SECTION 3.  This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2000.
