                   A BILL FOR AN ACT

MAKING AN APPROPRIATION FOR THE BIG ISLAND AEROMEDICAL UNIT.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1. Currently, the Big Island aeromedical unit has

sufficient funding to operate only twelve hours a day. The

emergency nature of its service and existence is severely

diminished if it is not allowed to operate around the clock. The

cost of this service has risen from the previous funding level of

$352,262 which allowed service to be provided only twelve hours a

day. Because there is a compelling need to allow the unit to

operate twenty-four hours a day, the purpose of this Act is to

appropriate sufficient funds to make that possible.

SECTION 2. There is appropriated out of the general

revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $625,604, or so much

thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 1999-2000, to fund

the Big Island aeromedical unit to allow it to operate twenty-

four hours a day.

SECTION 3. The sum appropriated shall be expended by the

department of health for the purposes of this Act.

SECTION 4. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 1999.
