                                 RE: H.R. No. 44
                                     H.D. 1

Honorable Calvin K.Y. Say
Speaker, House of Representatives
Twentieth State Legislature
Regular Session of 2000
State of Hawaii

Sir:

Your Committee on Agriculture, to which was referred H.R.
No. 44 entitled:

"HOUSE RESOLUTION REQUESTING THE SUPPORT OF THE TWENTIETH
LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII FOR THE RESPONSIBLE USE
OF AGRICULTURAL BIOTECHNOLOGY FOR THE BENEFIT OF HAWAII'S
     PEOPLE,"

begs leave to report as follows:

The purpose of this resolution is to request that the
Twentieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of
2000, support the responsible use of modern biotechnology to
benefit the people of Hawaii, the nation, and the world, and the
global environment through high yield agriculture production
requiring the reduced use of farm inputs and acreage.

Your committee recognizes the benefits of biotechnology and
the impact that it can have on the growth of agriculture in
Hawaii, the U.S. mainland, the world, and its environment when
this technology is used in a responsible manner.

Testimony in support of this measure was received from the
University of Hawaii College of Tropical Agriculture and Human
Resources, the Hawaii Farm Bureau Federation, the Maui County
Farm Bureau, the Hawaii Agriculture Research Center, the
Pineapple Growers Association of Hawaii, the Grocery
Manufacturers of America, Rescue Hawaii, Garst, Alexander &
Baldwin, Inc., and a concerned individual. The Department of
Agriculture (DOA) supports the intent of this resolution.

Committee concurs with the intent and purpose of H.R. No. 44, as
amended herein, and recommends its adoption in the form attached
hereto as H.R. No. 44, H.D. 1.
