A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

making an appropriation for pacon international.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1. PACON is the acronym for the Pacific Congress on Marine Science and Technology. The Hawaii Chapter of PACON International has been incorporated in the State of Hawaii to support the international and local programs for its membership of ocean scientists, engineers, and educators residing in Hawaii. The Hawaii chapter supports their dialogue with the international community through its membership in PACON International. The primary activities of PACON International are to sponsor a major international ocean science and technology meeting every year, sponsor a Science Teachers' Workshop (k-12) for Hawaii teachers and plan Ocean Day activities in June of each year.

The purpose of this Act is to appropriate funds to express strong legislative support for PACON International.

SECTION 2. There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $50,000, or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2001-2002, to support the activities of PACON International; provided that no funds shall be made available under this Act unless PACON International matches dollar-for-dollar with its own resources, the funds for the purpose for which this sum is appropriated.

SECTION 3. The sum appropriated shall be expended by the department of business, economic development, and tourism for the purposes of this Act.

SECTION 4. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2001.
