STATE OF HAWAII

A BILL FOR AN ACT

RELATING TO IOLANI PALACE.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1. The legislature finds that Iolani Palace has historical and cultural significance to the State of Hawaii as the palace of the former monarchs of Hawaii. The presence of vehicle parking along the perimeter of Iolani Palace detracts visually from this site. The purpose of this Act is to require the department of land and natural resources, with the advice of the Friends of Iolani Palace, to develop a master plan for the Iolani Palace grounds which includes a map of the existing parking stalls and a plan for replacing the current parking areas to grassed landscape or other nonvehicular use as may be appropriate.

SECTION 2. Section 6E-35, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended to read as follows:

"[[]§6E-35[]] Iolani Palace. (a) The official designation of the palace of the former monarchs of Hawaii shall be Iolani Palace.

(b) The department of land and natural resources, with the advice of the Friends of Iolani Palace, shall develop a master plan for the lolani Palace grounds which includes a map of the existing parking stalls and a plan for replacing the current parking areas to grassed landscape or other non-vehicular use as may be appropriate."

SECTION 3. There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $      , or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2001-2002, for a master plan for Iolani Palace.

SECTION 4. The sum appropriated shall be expended by the department of land and natural resources for the purposes of this Act.

SECTION 5. Statutory material to be repealed is bracketed and stricken. New statutory material is underscored.

SECTION 6. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2001.
